First printing. One of Stegner's most important novels, the story of a wheelchair bound historian who retreats to his grandparents' home in Grass Valley, California to research the lives of his pioneer ancestors. This novel spans four generations, from 1860 - 1970 and is set in several western states - the Dakotas, Colorado and Idaho, in addition to California - but it is more than a regional novel or historical fiction, but rather one which uses understanding the past to come to a greater understanding of our own times. Winner of the 1972 Pulitzer Prize. 569 pp. Very good overall in a good only dust jacket - a rather thick and inexpensively produced book, which means that there are often problems with the condition. On this copy the rear hinge is cracking, the spine is very slightly cocked, and the rather fragile dust jacket is partially split along the fold from the front flap, price-clipped and other edgewear (now protected by an archival cover.) Still a quite decent copy of a title which is rather uncommon in the first trade edition. .
