Early printing. Covers George Washington's life through his election as our first president, bu focuses on the young George growing up on a remote Virginia plantation in what was then the frontier. Illstrated with the beautiful glowing illustrations typical of the d'Aulaires - lithographed on stone in 5 colors by the artists. The d'Aulaires returned to the old craftsman's method of drawing with color directly on stone which results in the glowing color illustrations that are a highlight of their books. Large format, bound in illustrated boards, with a black cloth spine, and with illustrated endpapers. Very good condition - a bit of fraying at the ends of the spine, and some shelfwear to the edges of the boards, but in better condition than these books are often found, lacking the dust jacket. .
