Chicago: Way and Williams, (1897.) | First edition, first issue. A landmark in turn-of-the-century children's literature, the first juvenile book by Baum (who, of course, went on to write the Wizard of Oz and other Oz books) and the first book illustrated by a young Maxfield Parrish. Includes a frontispiece and eleven inserted plates of subtle and enormously appealing black and white drawings, a red and black decorated title page and a red and black illustrated page introducing the list of drawings. A very attractively produced volume, printed at the Lakeside Press, and bound in gray boards with a color illustration by Parrish repeated on both the front and back covers, spine lettering and decorations in gilt. Large format, measuring 11 3/8 inches tall by 9 1/8 inches wide. 265, [3] pp. . Fair condition only, and priced accordingly - both hinges are cracked, there is a loss of approx 1 cm at the top of the spine and 1/2 cm at the bottom. Very light foxing to the title page and the margins of a few illustrations, edge tear to the final page, and overall soiling to the cloth covers plus age-toning to the spine. Still a very beautiful book, despite its flaws, in the uncommon first issue, in completely original and reasonable condition and at a comparatively modest price. . |
