[stereotypical literature] Pyrnelle, Mrs Louise-Clarke. DIDDIE, DUMPS AND TOT or Plantation Child-Life. New York: Grosset & Dunlap, nd (ca 1920's) Hardcover

Reprint. Attractive edition of this book originally published in 1882 - in the preface, the author states that her primary object is to keep alive the old stories, legends, traditions and songs of the Southern slaves, and she contends that life on the Alabama plantation as she knew it was one of happy relations between master and slave. While the three little girls are charming, it is only in the final chapter (called 'what became of them') that reality intrudes, and, among other events, Sukey's Jim became a politician during Reconstruction and makes speeches 'against Southern whites, all unmindful of his happy childhood and his kind and generous master who strove in every way to render his bondage...a light and happy one.' Glossy frontispiece, illustrated endpapers. 240 pages. Very good+ in light green cloth, in a dustjacket with a little edgewear but overall bright and wth a very appealing (and subtly revealing) illustration on the fornt cover. .
