First volume of this rather brief-lived, but extremely interesting, and 'cutting edge' journal, founded, according Reed's introduction, to 'publish the finest work by Afro-American artists without regard to ideological or aesthetic affiliation.' Contributors include Cecil Brown (An introduction in which he talks about his experiences as a black man in a bookstore, and 'The African Shades,' a one-act comedy), Claude Brown on his life after publishing Manchild in the Promised Land, Francisco Newman ('The Blue Drifter,' a film treatment), John A. Williams (an article about a trip to Grenada), Spain Rodriguez ('Manning,' a comic strip), bronzes by Doyle Foreman, poetry by Clarence Major, David Henderson, Victor Hernandez Cruz, Ishmael Reed, Al Young, and many others. Preface by Chester Himes. SIGNED by BOTH Al Young at the introduction and by Quincy Troupe at his contribution 'Birthday Song for the Hoodoo Poets in the Sun of Love.' 184 pages. Very good in stiff illustrated wrappers (some rubbing to the wrappers, spotting to back cover), uncommon signed. .
