Thomes, William H. ON LAND AND SEA, OR, CALIFORNIA IN THE YEARS 1843, '44, '45. Chicago: Laird & Lee Publishers, 1892. Hardcover

Early reprint (this was originally published as a serial, and first appeared as a book in 1884.) The author, a native of Maine, came to California in 1843 from Boston, as a 16 year old sailor boy, on the Admittance captained by Peter Peterson; Thomes had been inspired by Dana's 'Two Years Before the Mas't, and wanted to encounter the same adventures and dangers that Dana had - and while this book, an account of that trip in the form of an adventure story, does not reach the literary level of Dana's classic, it is still very interesting, especially in its personal descriptions. Thomes and his friend Lewey, another ship-boy, feigned an attack of smallpox to be left in California when the ship started for home. Notable for both its account of the voyage - including a very vivid story of encountering a slaver bound for Cuba - and for its description of life in California in the early 1840's, in the idyllic years before the discovery of gold. Illustrated by Childe Hassam. A title in The Library of Choice Fiction series. 351 pp plus 1 pg advertisement. Very good in dark brown cloth with gilt lettering and an oval portrait in gold and silver on the front cover, top edge gilt. Rubbing to the lettering on the spine, rear hinge partially cracked. .
