(Slavery, court document) PETITION TO THE CLERK OF THE COURT St Helena Parrish, LA. 1846.

Manuscript dated July 29, 1846 and addressed to Mr. J. Beckham. One sheet, measuring 15" x 10", folded. The text appears on one half of the front, the inscription to the clerk of the court is centered on the other half, and the verso is blank. Although brief, this is an unusually poignant document, one that gives a name, and a glimpse of the character of a young black girl - a girl who apparently persisted in running away to be with her mother. It reads, as follows: "I have ascertained that one of the negroes mortgaged to me by Wm Collinsworth is in this Parish, and I wish you to issue an execution and hand it to the sherriff, and instruct him to seize on her, and advertise her for sale on the first Saturday in October, and I will try to be there. - The girls name is Rachel and is perhaps 12 or 14 years old and will probably be found about Mr Collinsworth's, or in the neighborhood, be good enough to attend to this business & oblige yours respectfully" Very good, with creases from folding, browning from age. A small chip missing from one edge, and a small hole where the document had been sealed with wax (traces of the red wax remain.) Protected in plastic (removable - only secured at the edges.) .
