Ever since the first story - 'The Five Little Peppers and How They Grew' was published in Wide Awake Magazine in the 1880's, these stories have been read and loved by generations of children (Sidney married the publisher of that magazine - Daniel Lothrup - and together they purchased Nathaniel Hawthorne's home in Concord, Massachusetts - the Wayside.) lllustrated with a frontispiece and 7 inserted plates by Hermann Heyer. A relatively early printing by the original publisher - copyright page indicates 214th thousand. 425 pp. Good only in illustrated green boards - binding is cracking, but holding, in a couple of places, one plate missing, covers are attractive. .
