The story of a young Japanese boy living in the internment camp in Poston, Arizona - when his grandfather carves him a wooden blue jay, he is at first disappointed until he learns the symbolism of the little bird. Illustrated in full color by Isao Kikuchi. SIGNED on the front endpaper by the author with the words "May your family heritage be a source of pride in your life." The author was born in that same camp in Poston, and the illustrator was interned at Manzanar in California and fought during World War II in the famous 442nd Battalion (composed entirely of Japanese Americans, the members of this battalion received more awards for heroism than any other in US history, In addition, this book has a gift inscription which reads in part " .... Remember that I was at this camp in Poston, AZ too. So many things happen that we never know about and this was a very unique experience I had when I was only 20 years old! Love Grandma."
