Searle, Chris. BLACK MAN OF SHADWELL: Four Stories. London: Writers and Readers Publishing Cooperative, (1976.) Hardcover First Edition

First printing. Rather uncommon collection of stories which move 'through history and across continents to explore the problems of race, class and human contact.' Two of these stories are set in the Caribbean, where Searle worked for a time (in Grenada, the native country of his wife). Searle himself, a poet, teacher, jazz critic and activist has had an interesting history: he was fired from his first teaching job, because of the poetry he encouraged his students to write (poems which often reflected the dark side of their lives in housing projects and poverty), and in addition to his poems, he has published a children's book, a novel and a book on teaching English which won the Martin Luther King award . Illustrated with drawings by Mel Robinson. 103 pp. Very near fine in near fine dust jacket. (initials on first page, price-clipped.) .ISBN # 0-904613151

We currently have over 50,000 books and magazines in stock - many more than are listed on our website, so please do not hesitate to contact us if you cannot find what you are looking for. We enjoy helping clients develop their collection - whether by author or by topic - or for research purposes, such as a doctoral dissertation - and we also enjoy making suggestions for an appropriate book as a gift.

The books available for sale range from rare to used books: antiquarian or second hand, collectible or reading copies, and out-of-print books, magazines and pulps. Our inventory contains fine first edition literature, advanced review copies (ARCs), proofs, limited editions. Books signed or inscribed by the author or illustrator is one of our specialities with over 3,000 in stock.
