Whitney was a suffrage worker, a volunteer at the NYC settlements, a worker among the poor in San Francisco before and after the earthquake, a militant pacificist - all experiences which led her from her position as a D.A.R. to socialism and eventually to become a founding member of the Communist Party in the US. In 1919, she was arrested after speaking on the "Negro problem" in Oakland, and spent 7 years in jail until widespread protest from all layers of society resulted in a pardon.
