McCunn, Ruthanne Lum THOUSAND PIECES OF GOLD San Francisco: Design Enterprises, 1981. Hardcover First Edition

First printing. Described as both a biographical novel and the first biography of a Chinese American pioneer woman, this is the story of Lalu Nathoy, later known as Polly Bemis, who was shipped to America as a slave in the mid-19th century and auctioned off to a Chinese saloon keeper in an Idaho mining camp. The basis for the film of the same name. Issued simultaneously in both hardcover and paperback - McCunn gives an interesting account of the publishing history and its popularity: it was self-published in 1981 ' and sold over 30,000 copies. It was also an alternate selection of BOMC's Paperback Book Club while it was a self-published book. In 1983 Dell brought it out in its Laurel Line and in 1988 Beacon brought it out as a trade paperback. It has been continuously in print since it was first published in 1983, has sold over 200,000 copies, was made into a film, and has been translated into Chinese, Mongolian, French, Portuguese, Danish, and will be shortly coming out in Greek.' This, the first hardcover printing, is quite uncommon. Near fine in near fine dust jacket (prev owner's small label on front endpaper.) .ISBN # 0-932538-07x
