Early printing. A story of a voyage by packet ship from New York to San Francisco in the early 1850's. Although life on shipboard, as told from the perspective of the two children of the captain, is much idealized, this is an still interesting and enjoyable book. Illustrated with a frontispiece and 2 plates by Thomas Nast, with the frontispiece being an amusing picture of the discovery of a little black girl, a stowaway, who calls herself 'Wooly Butts.' A title in the 'Mayflower Series for Girls.' 221 pages plus 6 pages of advertisements. Very good+ in tan cloth covers with a red illustration on the front cover and spine, gold title panel on the spine and a silver panel with Mayflower series on the front cover. A nice tight copy with only minor shelfwear to the edges of the boards, gift inscription in pencil on the front endpaper presenting this book to a pupil from his teacher. . |
