First printing. Young adult historical novel set in New Mexico in 1680 when El Pope led an Indian war of revenge against the Spanish who had oppressed and enslaved them. This focuses on the a 200 mile trek through the mountains, made by 3 boys - 2 Spanish and 1 Indian - and the gradual understanding of each other that they achieved. The author's note mentions that during the actual Journada del Muerto of the refugees, there were 50 deaths a day - or one for every 1000 feet of desert they traversed. Fine in near fine dust jacket (price-clipped, some rubbing at the ends of the spine.) .
