Later printing. The 2nd book in a very popular series written for older girls (in just 4 years it had 8 printings), but now rather hard to find - illustrated by John Goss (frontispiece and 5 plates on glossy paper.) While the emphasis in this book, as in most of the series of the era, is on both educating the reader and telling an interesting story (thus the benefits of the outdoors is emphasized in this title), the common usuage of the term 'greaser' for Mexican Americans is indicative of how deeply entrenched unthinking prejudices were at that time. The Mexicans in the book are presented as devoted and hard-working but childlike - but despite the overall favorable presentation, the derogratory term is used routinely. 305 pp plus 6 pages of advertisements. Good only in gray-green cloth, illustrated front cover. Fading and wear to the spine, frontispiece detached but present, gift inscription dated in 1928. Still a good reading copy. . |
