Jackson, Donald. VOYAGES OF THE STEAMBOAT YELLOW STONE. New York: Ticknor & Fields, 1985. Hardcover First Edition

First printing. "The life and times of an early-American steamboat as it pioneered on the Upper Missouri River and played a major role in the War for Texas independence." A history not just of a steamboat, which between 1831 and 1837 plied the Mississippi and Missouri and the Brazos River in Texas, but also of the effect of technology on developing the frontier and expanding the empire. While this steamboat had a short life, it covered a broad range of frontier experiences: 'it traveled up the Missouri River during the 1830s helping John Jacob Astor's fur trading empire. George Catlin and Karl Bodmer rode on the Yellow Stone as did the Indian chief Black Hawk. Toward the end of her life the steamboat was commandeered by Sam Houston during the fight for Texas Independence.' Illustrated with maps, many photographs, prints and facsimiles. Includes a glossary of steamboating terms, notes on sources, appendices, index. xxiv, 182 pp. Very good in very good dust jacket. .ISBN # 0-899193064
