First printing. Detailed story of the historic Clear Creek narrow gauge; begun in 1872, this railroad was the first narrow gauge line to penetrate directly into the Colorado Rockies. Since the cost of construction was only $20,000 a mile (vs $90,000 for a standard railroad), it provided an incentive for the building of other narrow gauge lines throughout the country. Large format, profusely illustrated with black and white photographs and with 3 color plates at the beginning of the book, and a color painting on the table of contents page.
