First printing. 'The first English edition of the works of a poet who has been acclaimed by the leading critics and writers of the Occident as one of the greatest masters of our time. Poet, seer, magician and prophet..' George's influence on the young in the years following the first World War was substantial - his poetry emphasized heroism and self-sacrifice - and some of his followers eagerly adopted the new Nazi movement; George himself not only refused any honors, but he also went into voluntary exile to Switzerland where he soon died, and according to his instructions his body was not returned to Germany. Nevertheless after his death, he was hailed as a 'Nazi poet' and that hurt his reputation - something which is just now beginning to be re-evaluated. This collection, a bilingual edition with the English on the recto, the German on the verso, was selected from seven major volumes of the author's work. Translated by Carol North Valhope and Ernst Morwitz, and with an introductory essay by Morwitz. Translators' note and list of poems. 245 pp. Very good+ in coarse, wheat-colored linen cloth (gift inscription dated in 1943 on the front endpaper, lacking the dj.) . |
