Fisher, who was also a physician in addition to being a writer, was already well-established as a novelist when he wrote this book; however, this is perhaps his most historically significant book since it is considered the first detective novel to be set in an all-black environment, making Fisher a forerunner to the likes of such African-American detective writers as Chester Himes and Walter Mosley. It is set in 1920s-30s Harlem and involves the murder of NGana Frimbo, a self-proclaimed conjure-man who is actually the Harvard-educated heir to the throne of an African kingdom. Dr. John Archer, a Harlem physician with a keen intellect and insatiable curiosity, teams up with Detective Perry Dart to solve this case - one which becomes even stranger when when Frimbo miraculously returns to life and announces his intention to solve his own murder. Good only in beige cloth - some spine slant, wear to edges and corners, overall soiling to the cloth. Synopsis from front flap of dust jacket pasted inside front cover. Binding slightly cracked just before the title page. Despite the flaws, this is still a very readable copy of a very uncommon first edition. .
