Douglass, Frederick. MY BONDAGE AND MY FREEDOM. Part I, Life as a Slave. Part 2, Life as a Freeman. New York and Auburn: Miller, Orton and Mulligan, 1855. Hardcover First Edition

First edition. Douglass's second autobiographical work, published 10 years after the first - and a longer, more complex and much more assured work. In a letter from Douglass quoted in the Editor's Preface, Douglass refers to this a 'full account of my life as a slave and my life as a freeman.' Divided into two parts: the first and longer part treats in detail his daily life in Baltimore, where he was relatively kindly treated and where he taught himself to write, and on a Maryland plantation and at the farm of Covey, the 'slave-breaker. Introduction by Dr. James McCune Smith. Frontispiece of Douglass and engravings preceding each section. 464 pp plus 4 pp advertisements. Good condition in original blind stamped cloth - lettering on spine rubbed and faded, wear to edges of boards, and loss of about 1/4 inch at the ends of the spine, some foxing and staining, most noticeable on the frontispiece and the last few pages of the book. Contents are clean with scattered foxing mostly in the margins, binding is relatively tight, and easily readable. .
