First printing. A comprehensive account of this "comparatively new state" by a visitor from Ohio who "made an honest effort" to see things as they are, during her 2 year stay there. Includes much on the growing importance of agriculture, chapters of the climate and rainfall, sections on both Northern and Southern Calfornia, and a specific chapter on the Chinese population of the state (which portrays them as hard-working, valuable and reliable workers, but still begins with perhaps unconscious racism with the words "John Chinaman"), others aimed at prospective settlers and tourists, and a final chapter on visiting Yosemite (which is the subject of most of the illustrations in the book). Folding map of California inserted at front, frontispiece and 15 glossy plates, depicting, in addition to many scenes from Yosemite, San Francisco's Golden Gate, Mission Dolores, an alley in Chinatown, etc. xi, 238 pp. plus 7 pp advertisements. Very good in green cloth with gilt lettering and black decorations (hinges cracked, spine slightly darkened, but overall a bright and attractive copy.) . |
