Second edition, revised, 25th and 21st thousandth, respectively. While originally written to provide to European readers salient information on the structure and life of the United States, this has long been considered a classic work in its area. Bryce based it on several tours of the United States which he made in the 1870's and 1880's. This second edition omits the controversial chapter on Tammany, which was the subject of a possible law suit, and includes some corrections to the first ediiton. Volume One focuses on the national, state and local governments. Volume Two is a study of the political system - with many chapters on the party system, including rings, bosses, corruption, fights against 'the machine', etc - and on the social institutions, including chapters on the railroads, equality, the pleasantness of American life and its uniformity. Index. 724, 764 pp. Very good- in dark blue cloth with gold lettering and bands on the spine (hinges cracked,.some wear to the ends of the spine, bumping and wear to the corners, but tight and sturdy.) . |
