First printing. Scarce early issue of A B C or Alphabetical Railway Guide for August 1878. 224 numbered pages, plus numerous pages of advertisements preceding and following the actual guide, bound in sewn wrappers. Front cover is an advertisement for "Eno's Fruit Salt" under the header "Paris Exhibition/Crossing the Channel - Sea Sicknesss/ Indispensable to all" with a picture of a little girl and "nauseaous drugs" under her, inside is an ad for Williams & Bache patent duplex lamps - Outer rear cover advertises a tour to the Exhibition, inside has an ad for painless dentistry and a "knockabout bag.".Advertising includes hotels, Cunard line, tours to the Paris Exhibition, inserts for Tourist tickets to the South Coast and Isle of Wight in pink, for the Midway Railways in bright blue and for the London and Northwestern Railway in purple. Very fragile, missing front cover, upper corner of first page missing, chipping and wear to edges and parts of the spine have chipped away - folded map is torn along some of the folds, but the map is all there. .

The topics in which we specialize include African American literature and history, Latin American literature, mostly in translation and works by Chicano or Hispanic authors, Hawaiian, Asian and Asian American and Native American fiction and nonfiction, women authors and women's studies, mystery and detective fiction, science fiction, fantasy and horror, children's books and vintage juvenile series, poetry, small press publications, focusing especially on the 60's counter culture and beat writers, and Western Americana and California history.
