JACQUELINE OF THE
CARRIER PIGEONS. NY: Macmillan, 1937. First thus. Reissue
in the 'Young People's Library' series of Seaman's first book to be
published. Although there are some suspenseful elements to this
story of the siege of Leiden in the 16th century, it is a historical
novel rather than a mystery story. The heroic actions of
the
young boy Gysbert are based on a true story, although the character of
his sister, Jacqueline, is fictitious. Includes the
original introduction by William Elliot Griffis and a frontispiece
by George Wharton Edwards. A slightly larger format than
the original 1910 Sturgis and Walton edition, this is bound in
blue-gray cloth with white lettering on the spine and front cover. Very
good condition (bookplate.) Book #26386 $28.00
THE SAPPHIRE SIGNET.
NY: Appleton-Century, (c. 1916.) Later printing. One of
Seaman's best books, which uses very effectively both the historical
mystery, set during the American Revolution and involving a plot to
murder George Washington, and the 'modern' New York City and the
constant tearing down and rebuilding which it had undergone.
Illustrated by C. M. Relyea, 290 pp. Ex-library copy with quite a bit
of wear - a rather terrible copy of what I think is one of her best
books, and definitely one of the harder to find titles. Re-bound
in sturdy orange buckram with black lettering, usual library markings,
missing the frontispiece (although all of the other 7 plates are still
present), some soiling to covers, bumping to corners, and tears to the
margins of the pages. Still a good reading copy of a really good
mystery for older children. Book #26385 $50.00
THE CRIMSON
PATCH. NY: The Century Co., 1921. Early printing. Orig
published in book form in 1920. Illustrated with frontispiece and 3
other plates by C. M. Relyea. 226 pages.Bound in tan cloth with
dark brown lettering on front and spine, and dark brown and red
illustration. While not one of her best-written books in terms of
the story, this is one of the scarcer titles. Fair
condition: spine and hinges rather clumsily reglued, bookplate of
school on front pastedown (but no other markings), some soiling to
cover and edges of textblock. Book # 21121 $70.00
THE CHARLEMONTE
CREST: A Mystery of Modern Haiti. Garden City, NY:
Doubleday, 1948. Later printing. Originally published in 1930,
this was reissued as a title in the 'Young Modern Series.'
Illustrated by Manning de V. Lee. 228 pp. Very good- in teal colored
boards with black lettering on the spine (some wear at the ends of the
spine, usual light toning to the pages, tight binding ), no
dj. Book #26249 $21.50
